EBOT Exam Newsletter | Volume I | Issue I/2025

EDITORIAL

Dear friends,

It is my pleasure to present this first newsletter dedicated to EBOT Exam.

In this first edition, you will find information on the EBOT exam, an update on the rules applying as from 2025 and information on the registration process. You will also find a testimony from a successful candidate.

We strive to improve the quality of care through improving the quality of training and education of medical specialists, and a fair assessment is key for this.

It is our ambition to invite as many orthopaedic and trauma surgeons as possible to take this high-quality exam, at the end of their training, to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. This will contribute to validate the competence of surgeons and improve the quality of care for patients.

We look forward to your success!

Prof. Dr. Enrique Gómez Barrena | EBOT Chairman

THE EXAM

The EBOT EXAM IN A NUTSHELL

The EBOT exam is jointly organized by the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) and the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT).

The EBOT exam has been running since 2001. It is a European label of excellence demonstrating that successful candidates have reached a high level of knowledge in Orthopaedics and Traumatology.

The EBOT exam consists in a written and an oral part. Since 2011, an interim exam has been organized and occurs annually to encourage residents to test their knowledge in-training and receive personal information, checking whether they reach the requested level or show areas to improve.

Over the last decades, thousands of candidates participated in EBOT exams thereby demonstrating their interest in challenging their knowledge and skills in Orthopaedics and Traumatology. Many Fellows of the EBOT are today well-recognized surgeons across Europe and even became Examiners.

It is our ambition that this European examination will help to assess and will contribute to increase the competence of Orthopaedics and Traumatology Surgeons in Europe and even beyond.

UPDATES IN 2025

In 2025, EBOT decided to extend the eligibility to the written part of the exam to non-European citizens.

As a result, non-European citizens will be entitled to sit the written online exam and, if successful, receive a Certificate of Basic Knowledge in Orthopaedics and Trauma.

For the oral part of the exam, current eligibility rules still apply.

Only European citizens and non-European citizens working in Europe can take the oral part once they passed the written part.

Please note that this also includes UEMS Associated Countries.

The examination fees for the oral part in 2025 were set at 600€ for European citizens and 1200€ for non-European citizens working in Europe.

SUCCESSFUL STORIES

THE ORAL EBOT EXAM LISBON 2024

"I have tried to go through the oral exam several times and got passed. My principle is that failure is not the end, but the motivation to do better and work harder to change it, being taught playing the violin. The application for the written exam and the details are well explained and carried out. For the oral examination, each time the organisation was very good.

The 2024 Oral exam in Lisbon was very well, felt not only by me but also by many other candidates (to whom this exam was their second trial) who expressed the same opinion. We all do agree that the overall organization (dates, flexibility of choosing the day, the place and specially and specifically the e-mails explaining and unfolding the progression of the examination) was superb, even better than the previous one.

The accompaniment before, during and after the oral exam was so professional and cordial. It is essential to indicate also the communication, demands and questions by candidates by email were treated rapidly and replies were very helpful.

I admit that I am so happy for this enriching experience with all its steps in its ups and downs, and for the pleasure to have new wonderful acquaintances.

I have learned much, and it gave me more encouragement and motivation for my career, and even for keeping further learning and improving my knowledge and patients’ approach."
